Location
The Three Capes Scenic Loop, on the North Oregon Coast is a lovely area with long stretches of beach, beautiful Netarts Bay, coastal forests with ancient spruce, Cape Lookout jutting out into the ocean, an historic lighthouse, the famous Octopus Tree and three quiet villages well away from the hustle, bustle and commercialism of Rt. 101.
Sea lions, seals, pelicans, eagles and lots of sea birds make their home there and nearby are some of the best whale watching sites on the coast. There are long sandy beaches to walk on if you head south, and tide pools, caves and big rocks to climb on if you walk north. There are agates and sand dollars to gather on the beach. Cape Kiwanda, Cape Lookout and the Cape Mears estuary and spit are all close, each one featuring terrific hikes.
Oceanside, an artsy village nestled into a natural amphitheater amongst lots of trees, is often called “the Carmel of the Oregon Coast.” In addition to cabins and houses, many owned by artists, architects or refugee planners, it has one of the Oregon coasts’ finer restaurants, Roseanna’s, a cool espresso café and a community center that hosts celebrations such as the semi-annual Art Fair, the Oceanside Dog Show and the occasional dance, concert or theatre performance.
Beach walks, coastal forest hikes, reading, kite flying, bird watching, crabbing, fishing, windsurfing, boogie boarding, hang gliding, clamming, mussels, blackberries and huckleberries, the Tillamook Pioneer Museum, Museum of Flight and the Cheese Factory are all right at hand.
