California : Palm Springs
Palm Springs, California
Palm Springs, with its floods of irrigation, contrasts starkly with the surrounding desert. For a bird's-eye view of this city of plush resorts and immaculate golf courses, take the Aerial Tramway up the side of Mount San Jacinto. The 2.5-mile ride takes skiers, hikers, and sightseers to the mountain top chalet and restaurant.
You can also visit the Palm Springs Desert Museum for its vast display of fine art, archeological artifacts, and natural history exhibits. The nearby Indian Canyons on the Agua Caliente Indian Reservation offer a fascinating opportunity to see the wild desert up close; especially popular are the 2,000-year-old Washingtonian palms in Palm Canyon. For a tamer look at desert flora and fauna, you can visit the Moorten Botanical Gardens. The waterslides at Oasis Waterpark offer welcome relief from the desert heat.
The desert culture beckons visitors to explore, and there are a variety of different ways to do it. Take in an aerial view aboard the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway which travels up into the mountains to a height of 8,516 feet. Two 80-passenger enclosed cars make the journey throughout the day, seven days a week. Hike through 1200 acres of scenic trails featuring desert wildlife and botanic gardens at The Living Desert. Nearby Joshua Tree National Park is a rock climber's paradise, and offers Climbing School for both beginners and advanced climbers. Covered Wagon Tours of Coachella Valley Preserve takes individuals or groups on wagons drawn by draft mules into the desert culture of the past. Or enjoy a safari from a different vantage point at Camel Safari at Lake Cahuilla. Be sure not to miss the famous Windmill Tours in the Colorado Desert. Visitors ride in wind-powered electric carts to see spectacular wind-driven turbine blades, with rotor sweep half the length of a football field. You will, as they say, "Feel the wooosh."
After the excitement of the desert, you may be ready to sample some of the healing waters that make Palm Springs such a lush oasis. Many of the hotels offer hot water mineral pools along with a variety of other spa treatments. One that offers its pools for day use is the Desert Hot Springs Spa Hotel. They have eight natural hot mineral pools and admission includes use of the sauna and locker room facilities.
