The St. Johns River flows north through the heart of Putnam County where miles of natural pristine lands line its banks. Along the banks of the St. Johns, in Palatka Riverfront Park, is the location of Florida's famous Azalea Festival in March and the Blue Crab Festival in May, as well as many other fun filled events throughout the year.
Ravine State Gardens, located just a few blocks from the river, features a 189 acre ravine that drops as much as 100 feet deep. In February and March the park is filled with thousands of blooming Azaleas and Camellias. A natural spring that feeds into the St. Johns River flows along the bottom of the ravine. Just South of Palatka, Buckman Lock allows boaters passage into Lake Ocklawaha, an aquatic wonderland. Although the lake is man-made, it provides habitat for osprey, wood stork, bald eagles, largemouth black bass, alligators and manatee, among other Florida wildlife.
Putnam County's other river the Ocklawaha River is a paddler's paradise. This eight mile stretch of underdeveloped waterway is braided with streams where white ibis roost, otters play and alligators nest. West of Palatka is the small town of Interlachen, where bird watchers view habitat on one of the many lakes that dot the rural countryside.
