HANAPEPE itself, at the foot of the hill beyond 'Ele'ele, is often lauded as one of Kauai's quaintest little villages. Driving straight through on the highway you'd barely notice it was there, and sadly even the half-mile detour down its old main street, just inland, is these days a disappointment. The old wooden stores of this plantation town had just about managed to reinvent themselves as art galleries and specialty stores when Hurricane Iniki knocked the stuffing right out of them. Now they're more derelict than ever, and Hanapepe feels like a Wild West ghost town, where the only sign of life is the occasional white-bearded old-timer dozing on a rocking chair. It's worth pausing at one or two of the old stores, though; Kauai Fine Arts as some interesting old maps, and the cafe is a welcoming place to stop. The river is not quite visible from the main street, but for more views you can either walk across the swinging rope bridge roughly opposite the cafe, or drive for a mile or two up Awawa Road just past the bridge at the west end of town.
