South Carolina : Hilton Head Island
Hilton Head Island, South Carolina
Miles and miles of sandy beach, two dozen championship golf courses, hundreds of tennis courts, and abundant opportunities for every kind of outdoor activity have helped make Hilton Head one of the most popular resorts on the East Coast. Although European settlement began in the 17th century, and many plantations and small farms existed here after the Civil War, it was not until 1956 that a bridge first connected the 42-square-mile island with the mainland. The town of Hilton Head Island was not incorporated until 1983. An eye towards ecological preservation has led to the creation of several wildlife preserves on the island including Sea Pines Forest Preserve, Audubon Newhall Preserve, and Pinckney Island National Wildlife Reserve, which offers 14 miles of nature trails. You can also visit the Waddell Mariculture Research and Development Center, where the commercial cultivation of marine life is under study.
A hidden Hilton Head can be discovered by learning about its history while seeing the sights. Some of the island landmarks include: Baynard Ruins in Sea Pines, the ruins of Braddock's Point Plantation House; Steam Cannon at Port Royal; Cotton Hope Plantation; Fort Mitchell, on a bluff overlooking Skull Creek; Rose Hill Plantation House, just over the bridge; the Zion Cemetery; and Baynard Mausoleum, the final resting place of many Revolutionary War soldiers.
Cultural activities have been in full swing on Hilton Head for years, even preceding the Arts Center's inception. Each season, tickets to The Hilton Head Orchestra become more difficult to acquire, with consistently sold-out performances. The orchestra's eighty musicians are gifted and cohesive, comprised of a few professional players from the Savannah Symphony in addition to talented members of our own community. Another highlight in the island's extensive arts portfolio is Dunnagan's Alley Theater, a 225-seat proscenium theater, the island's original playhouse, which today still hosts a variety of productions.
