New Hampshire is known as the Granite
State which is certainly appropriate once visitors see
the jagged granite mass known as the White Mountains.
These mountains are the only mountains in the northeast
that are taller than 5,000 feet. The White Mountains are
the state's most dominant feature and most popular attraction.
The mountains are full of hiking trails
and state and national parks that are perfect for the
nature lover. Some of the natural attractions include
Crawford Notch, the Old Man of the Mountains and the Flume.
Towns in this area have long been known as health resorts.
Even the interstate running through the mountains is narrowed
to two lanes in the interest of conserving the natural
beauty of the mountains. The lakes region in the
center of the state also draws many visitors.
The most dominant lake is Winnipesaukee. Wolfeboro has
been a resort on this lake throughout two centuries. The
southwest part of the state is known for its picture-book
villages such as Dublin, Jaffrey and Petersborough. Although
the coastline of New Hampshire is only 18 miles long,
it is quite scenic. Hampton Beach and Portsmouth are two
of the more popular stops along the coast.
