The first thing people usually think of when picturing this state is Mount Rushmore. This world-famous rock sculpture can be found in the rugged and beautiful Black Hills. In addition to this National monument, the Black Hills is home to Wind Cave National Park and Jewell Cave National Monument, both of which are home to large herds of buffalo. The Black Hills are a utopia for the outdoors type and provide camping and all levels of hiking or rock climbing. Visitors can wander off the beaten path and find old ghost towns and abandoned gold mines.

South Dakota is a very different state on the eastern side of the Missouri River. The landscape in the east is made up of fertile farmlands and peaceful glacial lakes. The state's largest city, Sioux Falls, has a wonderful zoo and a number of museums for tourists to this region.

Rapid City is another large city and is located near the Black Hills. It has a number of reasonably priced attractions for the entire family.
